Fast Facts

As a child, Peter Hook lived in Jamaica while his stepfather held a job with a glass company.

Barney grew up never knowing his real father. Living with his mother and grandparents in Salford, he originally used the surname Sumner, which was his mother’s maiden name. When she remarried, he adopted Dicken, his stepfather’s name. For a period, he wished to be known as Bernard Albrecht, although the reasons for that remain private. When New Order was formed, Barney went back to being a Sumner.

There’s a long-lost, unfinished Joy Division cover of a Northern Soul track. In 1978, they attempted to record N.F. Porter’s “Keep on Keepin’ On” but gave up after three days in the studio.

“She’s Lost Control” was apparently inspired by the time Ian Curtis witnessed a woman suffer an epileptic seizure.

Strawberry Studios no longer exits. Owner Nick Turnbull closed the place in 1991 to concentrate on making music videos.
